Movie Tuesday
Ricky and the Flash. Okay, the reviews aren't great, but we liked it. Meryl Streep is surprising and fun to watch playing in a rock band. A mother and wife who left her family to pursue her dream of becoming a rock star, Ricky is called back home to help her daughter through a difficult time. Lots of family drama, lots of music.

Pumpkin and Peanut Get a Bath
Pumpkin (Reseda) and Peanut (Resora) got a bath today. We have more information about these horses now. Someone who has foals from these mares provides us with photos and pedigrees. From the pedigrees we now know that Reseda is the oldest at 29 and Resoro is a mere 25. We are going to continue to call them Pumpkin and Peanut because they are sweet names for sweet horses.
Here are some photos of their bath experience.

Getting Ready
Yesterday I went to my primary doctor to get a certification that it was ok for me to have the spine surgery. He wanted me to have a carotid artery surgery so this morning I made an appointment. I was lucky to get one right after my MRI appointment. Luckily, they were both in Rancho Bernardo. The MRI was 40 minutes long, starting at 2:30 p.m. and the test was at 4 p.m.
The MRI was no problem, probably because I've had so many I can practically sleep through them. The carotid artery test was easy, too. It was a sonogram and it was over quickly. The technician said he didn't see any problems. Yea!
I got home about 5:30 p.m., just in time for a nap.

Movie Tuesday
Today we saw Southpaw starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Forest Whitaker, and Rachel McAdam. Rotten Tomatoes says 83% of viewers liked it--and so did we.

Day 3 - The Vet Comes
Pumpkin and Peanut seem to be getting along very well. Today, the vet came to look at their teeth and give them a once over.
Turned out they needed their teeth floated--no surprise. They got their vaccinations, too. They vet thinks Pumpkin is in her late 20's, maybe 28 or so. Peanut is probably in her 20's, too. If Peanut is Pumpkin's daughter (they look so much alike), the vet thinks Pumpkin must have been around 3 when she had her, they are so close in age.
Both of these horses are flea-bitten grays. Gray horses are more susceptible to malanomas. Peanut has a great many of them. The only thing to do is to watch her. If a malanoma seems to be compromising her life, then we will have to do something.
Here is Pumpkin getting her teeth floated. She is leaning because of the sedation.

Day 2 Horse Rescue
Pumpkin and Peanut made it through the night okay. They were very interested in breakfast. We had taken off their fly masks last night and they were pretty good when Dennis put the masks back on this morning.
I went down to the barn around 11:30 and gave all the horses apple pieces. Then Dennis came down with the dogs on leash. Dot stayed in the barn, but Flash met the horses without incident.
Today we are letting Doc and Shalla out into the pasture so they can meet the new horses. We are taking this step-by-step. Here is a video of the horses meeting each other.

Horse Rescue
It all started with an email from my horseback riding buddy, Joyce. She had forwarded an email from someone else in the Desert Arabian Horse Association (DAHA) asking for help in placing two mares owned by Dona Hall of Foothill Arabians.
Dona is a longtime friend of ours with whom, unfortunately we have lost touch. She lost her husband a number of years and has been suffering from strokes the last two years. She just had a strong that put her in the hospital. Her family has sold most of her horses, but there were two older mares that needed forever homes.
To make a long story short, I exchanged emails with several people and ended up calling her son. We agreed to take the two mares to our ranch and let them live out their lives here.
As it turned out, no one knew anything about the mares. No names, ages, training or anything. So we didn't know if we would have trouble catching them and loading them in the trailer. Homero came back from Mexico to help us and I asked Betsy if she would help and Joyce volunteered to help, too.
We drove over to the ranch and while the guys were turning around the horse trailer, we three girls went to get the horses. As it turned out, the horses already had halters on and came right up to the fence. Betsy put the lead ropes on and she and Joyce brought the horses out to the trailer. Then Betsy loaded the first horse without any trouble then the second one. We gave them hay to eat and they settled right in. After a little dancing feet, they became very quiet and road home in the trailer easily. What a relief. My job was to give advice and encouragement because my back is so bad.
Here are the horses settled in their corrals at our ranch. We're calling the big one Pumpkin and the little one Peanut.

Poor Dot
Dot and Flash were out on the front lawn in the evening while Dennis and I were in the jacuzzi on the front patio. We were in the jacuzzi for only about 5 minutes when we heard Dot screaming. We leaped out of the pool and I started screaming as loud as I could and Dennis was yelling until he hurt his throat to make as much noise as possible to scare the coyote who had hold of Dot. Then Flash came to the rescue and chased the coyote down the road into the pasture. Dot ran up the stairs to me and I took her inside. I cleaned the blood off her throat and it looked like one puncture wound. I took her to the vet in the morning and Dot had surgery. She is fine now.

Pine Valley Days 7/25/15
After months of work making jewelry, we finally took all my wares to the Pine Valley Days craft show. It was a very nice day, not too hot as it usually is. Joanne and Vivian both volunteered to help me pack up, set up and stay all day to try and sell my jewelry and glassware. I really appreciated their help. Dennis also helped setting up and taking down the canopies and hauling all the stuff back and forth. It takes a lot of work to do the craft show.
